The Kiwi Superstocks National Rankings are updated at least monthly during the Speedway season, using formulas similar to other sports organisations around the world, including Golf, Football and Tennis.
In these sports while a competitor/team may be a Grand Slam Champion or National Champion, they may not neccesarily be the #1 player/team in the game. A ranking format rewards overall performance based on consistency and attendance over a period of time.

THE LATEST RANKINGS
updated : Monday 30 January 2012
This DOUBLE UPDATE contains points following the New Zealand Superstock Championships, plus all other regular meeting points accumulated during January.

Following the biggest meeting of the Superstock season, there have been many moves within the Kiwi Superstocks National Rankings, with only one driver in the top-26 holding the same spot, and that is Peter Rees who maintains the #1 position, while the new 1NZ Joe Faram continues his recent climb up the rankings, to now be ranked at #7.

Current Top-3
1. PETER REES - 10p - Manawatu
3. GRAEME BARR - 32p - Taranaki
2. SHANE PENN - 3NZ/7p - Hawkes Bay

HOW THE RANKINGS WORK
This (unofficial) National Superstocks Ranking system was developed after researching various techniques used by different sports organisations around the world, including Golf, Football and Tennis. In these sports while a competitor/team may be a Grand Slam Champion or World Champion, they may not neccesarily be the #1 player/team in the game. A ranking format rewards overall performance based on consistency and attendance over a period of time.

Golf & Tennis in particular reflect what occurs in Superstock Racing in New Zealand; a largely individual based competition with a range of events throughout the year, each with varying degrees of importance to both competitors, fans and mainstream media.

While we stress that this system is 'unofficial', there are numorous benefits involved with establishing a national ranking system such as this, hence the reason it has been undertaken. Some of the benefits include:
* For Competitors, the ability to rate themselves alongside their peers over a period of time
* For Promotors, an added dimension with meeting publicity, and added car numbers
* For Race Fans, extra cars on the track as drivers attend extra meetings to improve their ranking
* For Media, an easier understanding of who's who, when reporting on the large range of meetings we undertake across the country

These are just some of the benefits, but across the board it provides an extra element of professionalism to the sport in all areas.

Similar to some of the sports mentioned earlier, we have divided the Superstock season into different levels of competition, each contributing points towards a drivers ranking. These are Grand Slam events, Regional Championships, and Local Race Meetings.

GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
These are the iconic events on our racing calendar, that have a large following by both drivers and fans over a long period of time. At a Grand Slam event, drivers earn ranking points for attending, then qualifying for the finals, with the Top 10 placegetters scoring additional points scaled on finishing positions. The Grand Slam events are:
* New Zealand Championship
* World Invitation Championship
* New Zealand Grand Prix
* South Island Championship
* North Island Championship

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Each track throughout the country holds its own local Championship (eg. King Country, Manawatu, and Canterbury Champs) during their race season. At a Regional event, drivers earn ranking points for attending, with the Top 3 placegetters scoring additional points scaled on finishing positions.

LOCAL RACEMEETINGS
From October to April, speedway clubs across the country run Superstock races on a regular basis. Drivers will earn ranking points for attending these meetings.

When collating the points for the Superstock rankings, kiwisuperstocks.co.nz utilises a 'rolling format'. What this means is that (for example) a drivers points currently (as at start of 2010 season) include their positions in the 2009 Championships and racing months. At the completion of the corresponding 2010 event/month, the 2009 points rolloff their total, while the points scored for the just completed event/month rollon.
Due to the nature of the event spread, drivers in the South Island may receive a higher point ratio for Grand Slam & Regional events.

The National Rankings are updated as soon as practicable following all Grand Slam events. All other updates (including Regional Championships) will occur as soon as practicable at the beginning of each month.

RANKINGS HISTORY
The National Rankings system used by kiwisuperstocks.co.nz has been in place since the beginning of the 05/06 race season, but was unveiled publicly at the beginning of the 06/07 season.
Since that time, regular monthly updates have been posted here, and are readily available for historical purposes.
