TUE 31 JAN / The 2012 Teams Champs will see a return to the groups style format, now that 12 teams are confirmed for this years event. The live draw took place this morning on LiveSPORT radio.

GROUP A: Rotorua Rebels, Christchurch Glen Eagles, Wellington Wildcats
GROUP B: Nelson Tigers: Wanganui Warriors, Auckland Allstars
GROUP C: Stratford Scrappers, Waikato Wanderers, Manawatu Mustangs

McCABE WINS, CONFIRMS ENGLAND CHALLENGE

MON 16 JAN / Andy McCabe has won the prestigeous World 240's title, and confirmed almost immediatly he will travel to England later this year to race in the UK World Final. McCabes win was a popular win, with the long time racer having been a contender for a major title breakthrough for a number of seasons. His 2 point victory ahead of Rotorua's David Elsworth and former winner Peter Bengston was a hard fought affair around the tight Paradise Valley oval in Rotorua.
Part of the winners package is an invitation to represent New Zealand at the BriSCA Formula 1 Stockcar World Final later in the year, and it was an excited McCabe who was already looking forward to the trip. The 2012 F1 World Final is at the seaside resort town of Skegness in England's northeast.

THREE UK DRIVERS CONFIRMED FOR 240's

TUE 10 JAN / Peter Rees defends his World title this weekend, in a finals field that already includes current 1NZ Dale Ewers, plus three experienced drivers from the UK.
Three time World 240's winner Frankie Wainman Junior will return once again, alonh with Mick harris who has been a regular visitor in recent seasons. Joining them will be the current BriSCA Formula 1 Stockcar World Champion Paul Harrison, who will be making his first trip down under since the mid 90's. FIRST REGIONAL CHAMPS OF THE SEASON

MON 5 DEC / Aaron Headington and Malcolm Ngatai have claimed their respective home tracks regiional championships this past weekend, the first to be decided in the new season.
Headington beat home a field of 17 in Huntly to claim his first 'Waikato Championship, ahead of Kris Allen in second, and Glen Drabble and Karl Ross who tied for third. Headington had a previous top finish in the event in 2009 when he finished third.
Meanwhile in Christchurch, Ngatai beat out Shane Harwood and Matt Ngatai, and successfully defended his Canterbury Championship, his fourth win in six seasons.

ALL GRAND SLAM EVENT DATES CONFIRMED

MON 15 AUG / As the seasons race calendar takes shape, the all important Grand Slam events have had their proposed dates ratified by Speedway NZ, and its a busy new year period!
The first Grand Slam event of the season will take place at Waikaraka Park in Auckland on December 29 and 30, when the Auckland track hosts the New Zealand Superstock Grand Prix. Just three days later, both the North Island AND the South Island Championships will be contested, in Wellington and Nelson respectively. Monday 2 January will be a one night affair for the mainlanders, while this will be qualifying north of the Cook Strait, while the North Island finals are et for Tuesday 3 January.
Then its a 10-day break before the World 240s in Rotorua in its usual spot mid January (Friday 13 & Saturday 14) before a two-week layoff before the biggie being staged at Huntly; The New Zealand Championships on Friday 27 & Saturday 28 January.

REES WINS COMPETITOR OF THE YEAR

SUN 31 JUL / Peter Rees stunning on track season continued off the track, winning two gongs at the annual New Zealand Speedway Awards. The Palmerston North star beat out other finalists Dale Ewers and Brendon Higgins for the award, before going on to claim the overall 'Speedway NZ Sportsperson Of The Year' for the second year running.
Other Superstock related awards went the way of the Rotorua Stockcar Club, who picked up the award for 'Best National Event' for the 2011/2012 Speedy Signs New Zealand Championship which was staged at the Paradise Valley venue in late December, and the 'Stars Of Speedway Collector Cards - Series 1' which was a Superstock feature won the 'Best Printed Promotional Item'.
Christchurch's Woodford Glen won 'Best Presented Speedway Facility' and the Stratford club was the 'Best Speedway Club Operation'.
