McDonalds Speedway - Kihikihi
Sunday 13 April 2008
Kihikihi held its second Grand Slam event in two seasons, with this event. But like the season before, the Grand Prix suffered with low entry numbers, and then had added problems with the weather. Originally scheduled as a two-night meeting in early March, the event was reduced to a one-day affair. This was then postposned due to wet weather. Entries were re-opened, and a field of 31 was registered for the re-run. But a number of meetings the previous night saw this reduced to 24 cars. No qualifying was needed, and the full field faced a three-race format to find the champion.

Meeanee Speedway - Hawkes Bay
Saturday 16 December 2006
Originally scheduled as a two-night meeting, the event suffered with low entry numbers so the decision was made to reduce it to a one-night affair. This in turn created an extra influx of entries forcing another late change to the format. Qualifying would see the field split into two groups each racing two 12-lap heats with a reverse grid format. The top-13 from each group then advanced for a single 15-lap final, with the race winner taking the title. Grid positions for the final were determined via points scored during qualifying.

Qualifying saw the first group dominated by Shane Penn and Dale Ewers, with Penn crossing the line first in the opening heat, but he was then relegated by the referee to third for cutting the poleline. Ewers inherited the win, and followed it with a second placing in the next heat. Kim Lace won that second heat, with Penn taking third. Ewers was quickest in the group, with a 17.96 lap, and top qualified overall. Problems in this group for Simon Joblin meant the current World 240 Champion missed qualifying.
There were problems too in the second group for Scott Miers who never made it out the gate, and Joe Faram who did, but then an engine problem surfaced on the start line before the first heat! The heats were won by the Waikato pair of Scott Redfern and Glen Drabble, but a pair of thirds for Stan Hickey saw him top quailfy for the group. Hickey also clocked the fastest lap of the night with a 17.81 in the second heat.
The single 15-lap final saw Ewers on pole as overall top points scorer during qualifying. Penn and Hickey were even second, with a cointoss giving Penn the outside of the front row which proved decisive at race start. Glen Drabble joined Hickey on the second row. A number of other coin tosses were needed to determine the final lineup for the big race.
The dramas unfolded right from the green, with Ewers blowing a gearbox on the line, causing momentary delays for those behind on the inside row. So the top qualifier was out, but Penn was away cleanly on the outside row, and immediatly set to work establishing a buffer. Lace, Wayne Hemi and Hickey were chasing. The biggest hit of the race came on lap five when Peter Rees disposed of Kevin Roberts in turn three, putting the 'super-tanker' on its roof. The hit smashed Rees own axle as well, putting both cars out. Hemi retired soon after, Hickey was having problems with Peter Bengston, and Steve Hampton and Scott Redfern had moved up the field. Lace could do nothing to close the gap on Penn, and despite a couple of lapped cars attempts to hit the race leader, it was all plain sailing for Penn who won by a clear 8 seconds.
Only six cars finished on the lead lap.
