McDonalds Speedway - Kihikihi
Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 February 2007
Kihikihi was another venue to host a Grand Slam meeting for the first time in 2007, with the venue being the location for the North Island Championships. The lack of lighting at the South Waikato venue meant a daytime meeting, with qualifying taking place on the Saturday afternoon, and the finals on a sweltering hot Sunday afternoon.
The entry field was split into three qualifying groups, with the top-8 from each advancing to the finals, and the next two highest scorers overall completing the 26-car finals field.

Only 25 drivers started the finals series, after Roydon Collingwood withdrew with engine problems. The format was for a one-race final, with starting grid positions decided by a 2-heat reverse grid competition.
Rotoruas Darcy Hunter won the first heat from near the front, and then had a superb drive from the back of the field to finish behind Jared Wade in the second heat.
These two former NZ Champions would start the big final on the front row, with Manawatus Bruce Ward on grid 3. From the start, Hunter developed the early lead, with Ward in pursuit, and Kevin Brooks quickly up to third. Clubmate loyalties were to the fore early, when Waikatos Lance Ashton blocked Hunter hoping to help Wade. However the major beneficiary was Ward who took over the front running. But it wasn't for long as Hunters smooth style on the super-slick Kihikihi surface saw him regain the lead. A stoppage a couple of laps from the end took all sting out of any attacks on the leaders, and Hunter took the win, to finish his Grand Slam season on a high, ahead of Ward making his first appearance on a major podium, with Wade remaining consistant for third. Only 16 cars finishing the race showed how tough the conditions were on the day.
